Reconstruction Terminal Apron PH 4(A), City of Wichita / Mid-Continent Airport

Project Highlights

  • Temperature-sensitive construction completed on time during winter months

Project Overview

As a missing piece to Wichita’s new Airport Terminal construction “jigsaw” project, this small paving job was essential to assure that one of the air carriers had access to their designated jetway. Although only 2,400 SY in surface area, it required the demolition of existing pavement and an existing hanger’s foundation and floor slab, excavation, proof rolling, and installation of an asphalt base, asphalt drainage layer, aggregate base and concrete pavement of two different thicknesses, divided by a diagonal expansion joint that prevented both thicknesses being constructed at the same time. All of this temperature-sensitive construction was expected to be completed in 45 calendar days, in the middle of winter. The project was completed within the allowable time.
