Austin Bluffs Parkway Bridge Over Cottonwood Creek

Project Highlights

  • New construction completed during live traffic.
  • New steel pedestrian bridge and concrete trail.
  • Class D structural concrete retaining wall.

Project Overview

This project required Wildcat to construct a new single span 160’ long x 50’ wide Bulb T (BT84) Girder bridge over Cottonwood Creek in northeast Colorado Springs. The existing Austin Bluffs Parkway Bridge necked down three lanes in each direction, then down to one lane in each direction. The new bridge provides re-aligned traffic with two lanes in each direction north of Woodmen Road. New construction was completed during live traffic west of the existing Austin Bluffs Parkway. Once the new bridge structure was completed, traffic was switched to the new bridge which allowed rehab work to be completed on the existing bridge, which consisted of removing the asphalt top mat/wear surface, installing a new waterproofing membrane, and constructing new approach sections and expansion devices. The total project required complete mill/fill with new 2” overlay within project limits, including the major intersection of Austin Bluffs at Woodmen Road and approximately 1000’ south in northbound lanes, new signals and street lighting north of Woodmen Road. The job included installation of a new structural steel pedestrian bridge and concrete trail with steel hand railing on top of a Class D structural concrete retaining wall which was approximately 250’L x 16’H along Cottonwood Creek.
